Modular shelving fails in two places, and almost never where people expect. It is not the design that lets you down, and it is rarely the wood. It is the span between the supports, and the four small pieces of metal holding the whole thing to a wall you have never actually looked inside.
In brief

Start with the span, because it caps everything else
The distance between two supports is the number that decides which material you can use, not the other way round. Guidance from shelving makers puts supports at no more than 500 mm centres for 18 mm MDF for anything but the lightest load, and up to 700 mm for 18 mm plywood, with figures around 750 mm quoted for a good quality sheet and closer to 800 mm once you glue a solid hardwood strip along the front edge.
The reason is stiffness rather than strength. MDF has a modulus of elasticity in the region of 400,000 psi against 1,200,000 psi and up for plywood, which makes it roughly three times more willing to bend under the same load. It will not snap. It will simply smile at you, permanently.

One detail that catches out even careful builders: wood creeps. Under a permanent load a shelf carries on deflecting long after installation, commonly cited at around half as much again as the sag you measure on the first day, and manufactured boards creep more than plywood or solid timber. Design for the shelf you will have in five years, not the one you photograph on the Sunday you finish it.
The wall matters more than the shelf
This is the part I would happily tattoo on a spirit level. Before you buy a single bracket, find out what is behind your plaster, because the anchor is where a modular system actually lives or dies.
On 12.5 mm plasterboard, published ratings put a hollow wall anchor of the molly type at roughly 15 to 25 kg per fixing and a spring or gravity toggle at 25 to 30 kg, with those figures cut by something like a quarter to a third on the thinner 9.5 mm board found in older partitions. Depth works against you too: the deeper the shelf, the more leverage a load applies to pull the top fixing straight out of the wall.
Along this coast, a great many flats are not plasterboard at all. Older buildings around Nice are full of hollow terracotta brick and solid rendered masonry, which behave completely differently. In hollow brick, the face shell is thin and unforgiving, so an anchor designed to open out behind it is worth far more than a longer screw. Drill into the body of the brick rather than the mortar joint, and if you are renting, check what you are allowed to drill into before you start.
What actually makes a shelf modular
Modularity is a fixing system, not a shape. Cutting your boards into cubes gives you a cube-shaped shelf, which you will still be dismantling with a screwdriver the day you want to change it. There are three approaches that genuinely let a unit evolve.
- Slotted uprights. Two or more vertical rails fixed to the wall, brackets that clip in at any height. The most flexible option by a distance, and the one that copes best with a move.
- Cleat and peg. Vertical side panels drilled with a regular row of holes, shelves resting on pegs. Nothing shows from the front, and you can move a shelf in thirty seconds.
- Stackable boxes. Individual open cubes that sit on each other and get strapped to the wall at the top. Ideal for renters, since the wall takes one anti-tip fixing rather than a dozen brackets.
The three can be mixed in the same room. My own preference for a long wall is slotted uprights, because the day I change my mind about the height of the middle shelf, the wall does not have to know.
Cutting and finishing without ruining the edges
Get the sheet cut to width at the merchant if you can. A full sheet of plywood is awkward, heavy and much harder to cut straight on a kitchen floor than any tutorial admits, and most timber yards will rip it for a small charge with a far better blade than yours.
For the rest, work in this order: cut all shelves to the same length in one setting rather than measuring each one, sand the cut edges with a block so they stay square, then seal them. Raw plywood and MDF edges drink finish, so an edge that gets one coat while the face gets two will always look patchy. Wear eye protection and a dust mask when cutting boards, particularly MDF, whose dust is fine enough to hang in a room for hours.
Two things worth settling before you buy the timber
How much weight will it really carry? Books are the honest test. A metre of paperbacks is heavier than most people assume, so if the unit is for a library, plan on shorter spans, thicker board or a mid support, and do not rely on a single anchor type across the whole run.
Can I do this in a rented flat? Often yes, with a freestanding or stackable design strapped to the wall by one discreet fixing rather than a wall-hung system. It is the version I recommend to anyone who might move within a couple of years, and it travels far better. Storage that has to work harder than it looks
Cube systems solve a different problem from open shelving, and they solve it well.
